Affixes

Morgan_Day

In an interview with with Morgan Day, the Associate Game Director of the World of Warcraft, it has been revealed that instead of introducing a new Affix for Mythic Plus, the developers decided to rather do an “affix refresh” as they call it. To summarise what Morgan said, in Season 2 of the game, the developers are making changes to the affixes system by not having a level 10 or “seasonal affix” like Thundering. Seasonal affixes were previously added to solve the problem of Dungeons feeling too predictable, but the developers are now trying to address the feedback around complexity and the number of mechanics players have to deal with. As such, they are taking a holistic approach to the affixes system and retiring Thundering, without a replacement.

Now that the developers have carried out the affix refresh, it’s time for us to take a closer look at the updates. These changes reflect the team’s dedication to responding to player feedback and enhancing the overall Mythic Plus experience. So, gear up and prepare to navigate the reworked affix landscape!

New Affixes: What You Need to Know About Afflicted, Entangling, and Incorporeal

The highly anticipated review of the affixes in Dragonflight Season 2 Mythic+ dungeons has now taken place, and we are excited to share the latest news about the changes. The development team has successfully revised the Level 7 bucket of affixes, ensuring a better balance and more opportunities for counterplay.

In the table below, you can find a summary of the affix changes, including removed and active affixes at the time of writing.

Active Affixes Retired Affixes
Storming Quaking
Volcanic (Replaces Explosive) Grievous
Afflicted NEW! Explosive
Entangling NEW!
Incorporeal NEW!

As part of the ongoing effort to improve the Mythic+ dungeon experience and in response to player feedback, the developers have decided to retire the Explosive affix, which has been a source of various challenges for players. In its place, the Volcanic affix has been introduced to provide a more balanced and engaging challenge for groups participating in Mythic+ dungeons.

Updated Afflicted Mechanics: Streamlined Debuff Management and Healing in Mythic+ Dungeons

In Dragonflight Season 2 Mythic+ dungeons, the Afflicted affix has undergone some changes to improve gameplay. The Afflicted Soul, which periodically spawns during combat with Disease, Curse, and Poison debuffs, now has less health and more consistent spawn behavior. Players still need to heal the Afflicted Soul to full health or dispel its debuffs within the 10-second window to prevent a 100% Haste reduction for all players.

Latest Updates to Afflicted Affix:

The Afflicted affix has received an effective spawn rate nerf in the latest patch. The maximum number of Afflicted Souls that can spawn is now capped at 2, and there appears to be a 15-second Internal Cooldown (ICD) between spawns. This allows players more time to relax between dealing with waves of Afflicted Souls and makes the affix much less overwhelming. Moreover, while there is a 15-second ICD, it doesn’t always spawn on cooldown, meaning players can sometimes go for an extended period without dealing with the affix.

Afflicted Mechanics and Spells

Afflicted Souls: These entities seek players’ aid while in combat and now spawn with poison, curse, and disease afflictions more consistently. They also have reduced health, making it easier to heal them to full health. Removing any afflictions or restoring the soul to full health causes it to despawn. Failing to do so in time inflicts players with a negative status effect.

  • Cursed Spirit: Restoring the Afflicted Soul’s health to full or dispelling a curse from it causes the spirit to fade away.
  • Poisoned Spirit: Restoring the Afflicted Soul’s health to full or dispelling a poison from it causes the spirit to fade away.
  • Diseased Spirit: Restoring the Afflicted Soul’s health to full or dispelling a disease from it causes the spirit to fade away.
  • Afflicted Cry: The Afflicted Spirit releases a cry of agony, reducing the Haste of all players by 100% for 10 seconds (10-second cast).

Strategies for Afflicted

  • Assign roles for dispelling specific debuffs (Disease, Curse, and Poison) to ensure efficient dispel coordination.
  • Keep an eye on the Afflicted Soul’s cast bar and prioritize healing it to full health or dispelling debuffs within the 10-second window.
  • Coordinate with your team to manage Afflicted Souls effectively, preventing the Haste reduction debuff.

Updated Entangling Mechanics: Focused on Snare Potency and Player Response

The Entangling affix in Dragonflight Season 2 Mythic+ dungeons appears more straightforward than the tooltip suggests. Developers have changed the snare potency and required players’ response to snap the vine successfully. They have also improved visual clarity and added audio cues for the Entangling affix. When players are in combat, entangling vines snare them, reducing their movement speed by 30% (previously 50%). Players must move 10 yards away from the anchor point within 8 seconds to snap the vine. Failure to do so results in a 3-second stun. Highly mobile classes may find this affix less challenging, but the 30% slow can lead to dangerous situations with trash mobs or bosses.

Entangling Mechanics and Spells

Entangling: While in combat, entangling vines snare players, reducing their movement speed and posing a risk of being stunned. Developers have adjusted the snare’s potency and the required response from players.
Entangled: An entangling vine snares players, reducing their movement speed by 30% (previously 50%). After 8 seconds, the vine entangles players, stunning them for 3 seconds. Players can snap the vine by moving 10 yards away from the source.

Strategies for Entangling

  • Maintain awareness of your surroundings to position yourself for a quick escape from the entangling vines.
  • Utilize mobility-enhancing abilities or items to counteract the 50% movement speed reduction and quickly snap the vine.
  • Coordinate with your team to control the battlefield, minimizing the risk of being slowed and stunned during critical encounters.

Developers are actively working on improving the visual clarity and audio cues for the Entangling affix to provide a better gameplay experience for players.

Incorporeal Update: Emphasis on Crowd Control and Improved Spawn Behavior

The Incorporeal affix introduces an additional ethereal adversary that must be controlled when it appears. It now plays a similar role to the Afflicted affix but with an emphasis on crowd control utility. Incorporeal beings are now immune to damage, have more consistent spawn behavior, and fade away when combat with non-Incorporeal Beings has ended.

Latest Updates to Incorporeal Affix:

The Incorporeal affix has received an effective spawn rate nerf in the latest patch. The maximum number of Incorporeals that can spawn at a time is still capped at 2, but sometimes only one Incorporeal will spawn, even on the largest pulls. There now appears to be a 20-second Internal Cooldown (ICD) between spawns, and unlike the Afflicted affix, it seems more likely to always spawn on 20-second intervals.

However, the current duration of Incorporeals matches the spawn rate ICD, which suggests that additional adjustments may be necessary to make this affix more manageable.

Incorporeal Mechanics and Spells

Incorporeal: Damage taken reduced by 99%. Immune to area of effect attacks. Fades away upon expiration or when combat with non-Incorporeal Beings ends.
Destabilize: Damage and healing done reduced by 50%. 8-second cast.

Strategies for Incorporeal

With a 20-second buff duration, these incorporeal beings cannot be efficiently defeated, forcing players to handle them for the entire duration. The critical aspect of this affix is the Destabilizing spell (previously known as Haunting Presence), an 8-second cast that requires interruption. Failing to stop the cast results in a 50% reduction in damage and healing for 10 seconds. To overcome this affix, players must work together to ensure timely “stops” of the Incorporeal add’s cast.

The developers have smoothed out the rate at which these beings spawn (sometimes too many at once) and the ease with which crowd control can be accidentally broken once applied. They have also implemented a change to Incorporeal Beings, making them fade away when combat with non-Incorporeal Beings has ended, improving the overall gameplay experience in Mythic+ dungeons.

Volcanic Affix: Reigniting Challenges in Mythic+ Dungeons

The Volcanic affix in Mythic+ dungeons has been reintroduced, providing players with a familiar challenge from previous expansions. In Volcanic dungeons, enemies periodically cause gouts of flame to erupt beneath the feet of distant players, both from bosses and trash mobs. It’s important to note that “distant” refers to the distance from the enemy mob, and in most cases, melee DPS and tanks do not have to worry about this mechanic.

Explosive Mechanics and Changes

Volcanic: While in combat, enemies periodically cause gouts of flame to erupt beneath the feet of distant players. The damage dealt by the Volcanic Plume is equal to 20% of the player’s health. Both boss and trash mobs will cause Volcanic Plumes to form.

Strategies for Volcanic

  • Ranged DPS and healers should stand close to the enemies to reduce the chance of Volcanic Plumes spawning beneath their feet.
  • Be aware of enemies that leap away or adds that spawn far from their summoner, as Volcanic Plumes may begin to appear in melee range.
  • Ensure proper positioning to avoid being hit by the Volcanic Plume, as it can be particularly dangerous when combined with other mechanics or environmental hazards.

Developers have brought back the Volcanic affix, offering players a familiar challenge in Mythic+ dungeons, and adding variety to the dungeon affix pool.

Keystone Affixes: Adjusting Progression and Levels

Keystone Affixes: Adjusting Progression and Levels Developers have recently made changes to the progression of affixes on keystones in response to the scaling of item rewards up to level 20. The updated affix progression aims to delay the introduction of affixes to keystones, giving players more time to adapt to baseline dungeons before encountering additional mechanics. This ensures that the complexity of a Mythic+ dungeon is better aligned with the rewards it offers.

Updated Keystone Affix Progression:

  • Periodic affixes are now added to keystones at level 7. (was 14)
    • Afflicted
    • Incorporeal
    • Volcanic
    • Entangling
    • Storming
  • Affixes that trigger on death or health ranges have been moved to level 14. (was 7)
    • Spiteful
    • Raging
    • Bursting
    • Bolstering
    • Sanguine

The developers appreciate the time players have spent testing Mythic+ on the PTR and are grateful for their feedback. They will continue to read, watch, play, and keep players informed as they make additional changes to the game.

Unveiling the Potential New Mythic+ Modifier: 'Defending' Discovered in PTR Testing

DefendingDiscoveredinPTRTesting

In addition to the exciting changes already revealed for Season 2 Mythic+ affixes, recent PTR testing for patch 10.1 has uncovered a potential new Mythic+ modifier called “Defending.” Interestingly, this modifier was not mentioned by the developers and was discovered by players who found it listed among the scrolls available from the in-game vendor.

The Defending modifier is described as follows: “While in combat, enemies periodically summon Defending Spheres, which grant shields to nearby foes if not destroyed.”

Notably, this mechanic closely resembles what the game creators initially intended for the Explosive modifier – to apply shields to enemies rather than deal damage to players. Despite ultimately removing the Explosive modifier and replacing it with Volcanic for Season 2, it appears that the concept has not been discarded. The Defending modifier could potentially make its debut in future seasons, such as Season 3.

Stay tuned for more information on this intriguing development as it becomes available.
