Arcane Mage Rework
Every update shakes things up in the game by adding new features and altering what has already been there. This time the changes were made to Arcane Mage, resulting in new talents, the removal of some old ones, and the overhaul of the others. Let’s take a look at them.
One of the biggest changes was the removal of the Rune of Power and the rework of Orb Barrage. Now it no longer procs orbs after X numbers of missile casts, as Arcane Barrage will now have a chance to proc an Arcane Orb.
Reverberate has been moved up the tree to make it more accessible. Moreover, Clearcasting has been baselined with Concentrated Power being in its place, improving Arcane Explosion and Arcane Missiles when you get the proc. Additionally, now you can cast more Arcane Barrage between Reverberate, Concentrated Power, and Orb Barrage during AoE and use less of other spells. Furthermore, the cooldown on Arcane Barrage has been removed, allowing for increased AOE speed.
Also, the throughput capstones have been replaced with utility ones, which are Mass Barrier or Mass Invisibility and Ice Cold. To make the place for these, Shifting Power is now moved up the tree, and Meteor has been put to the fire spec tree.
Now let’s see what’s new for Frost Mage.
Frost Mage Rework
This Mage also received changes, such as new talents and the removal of the 100% Icy Veins uptime requirement, which means less punishing playstyle and more interactions with Mastery: Icicles. But let’s talk one thing at a time.
The devs have fixed many issues that have been around for a while. For instance, now, the Mastery: Icicles spell works with more Frost Mage spells and many talents have been updated too. This means that specialization can’t achieve 100% uptime of Icy Veins anymore, a requirement for good performance in the past. Also, the defense power and utility have been boosted with changes to the class tree. Here are a few key points about these updates:
- Active talents like Glacial Spike, Ray of Frost, and Comet Storm are more useful now and no longer weak
- Frost Mages’ new bursty damage profile centered on Icy Veins makes them a better fit for many encounters
- Since making a mistake does not immediately result in losing all of your Icy Veins uptime, the specialization is considerably easier to play
- Frost’s burst AoE and small-scale AoE are now drastically more powerful and engaging due to Coldest Snap
Ice Cold, which replaced Ice Block is a strong defense that drastically increases Frost Mage’s ability to deal serious damage while staying alive during dangerous bursts of damage, which can be quite useful in the endgame content.
Fire Mage Rework
The latest patch brought some significant changes to Fire Mages, like the addition of new talents and improvements to Sun King’s Blessing, Flamestrike and Cauterize becoming baseline, and the removal of Rune of Power. And we’ll talk about them in detail.
Pyroclasm is not in the new talent tree, but it’s still available! Now, it’s included in Sun King’s Blessing. This change makes the short hard-cast for Combustion buff more powerful as it triples the damage of your Pyroblast or Flamestrike that triggers it.
Additionally, the activation buff for Sun King’s Blessing lasts longer, making it easier to keep going during breaks or between fights.
Moreover, now we have an alternative to Sun King’s Blessing that’s called Unleashed Inferno. It boosts the power of Combustion and significantly reduces its cooldown. However, this talent is about 8.4% behind Sun King’s Blessing, which is a substantial damage loss, so take this into account.
Furthermore, Fuel the Fire now grants Flamestrike a chance, equal to your Crit chance, to trigger Hot Streak. This means you no longer need two builders for Flamestrike in AoE situations. However, keep in mind that Flamestrike is still a ground-targeted spell, so targets will need to remain somewhat stationary for the 8-second duration of Flame Patch to take full effect.
The Fire Mage talent tree has undergone various other changes, affecting the positions of talents and their effects. A couple of examples include:
- From the Ashes flipped, providing the Mastery while Phoenix Flames is on cooldown
- Feel the Burn now functions with Phoenix Flames
- Mass Barrier grants a barrier as a group buff to 4 allies standing near you
- Mass Invisibility has been moved from to a class tree from a PvP talent
- Shifting Power is now on the top of a tree instead of being in the capstone layer
- Meteor has been moved to Fire tree and no longer divides damage without the follow-up capstone – Deep Impact
- Intensifying Flame increases Mastery: Ignite in non-AoE situations. Theoretically, the talent grants a tuning knob for ignite in AoE vs. Single Target
- Ice Cold can become an alternative to Ice Block, allowing you to cast it off GCD and carry on moving and casting during its duration at the cost of immunity. Also, it works extremely well with Cryo-Freeze, which makes it a great cooldown in situations when you don’t need immunity
