Before starting…
DPS in The War Within are probably closer than you would necessarily expect. Most specs are able to do competitive AoE DPS, though not every spec can hit the top levels. When looking at overall damage meters, many specs will seem closer than they have been in the past. I believe we are in a diverse meta where multiple compositions can be successful. However, tuning can change things quickly, especially if a spec is bad in raids but good in Mythic+. I’ll also share my thoughts on potential buffs or nerfs.
A Tier DPS
Augmentation Evoker
Augmentation Evoker has gone through an interesting cycle in the beta. While its damage isn’t as good as some other specs in A Tier, its utility makes it a strong contender. Changes to how stops work have made it less dominant, but it’s still a solid choice.
Frost Death Knight
Frost DK is the tankiest DPS in the game and offers some of the best AoE and single-target DPS. It’s well-rounded and unlikely to get nerfed significantly. This spec is excellent and one of the top performers.
Arcane Mage
Arcane Mage excels in single-target DPS, outperforming other specs by a significant margin. While its AoE potential is capped, its timer efficiency makes it a valuable asset. However, it has a high chance of getting nerfed due to its current raid performance.
Assassination Rogue
Assassination Rogue is expected to top the damage meters in most runs. Its AoE potential is high, and while its utility has diminished, its throughput makes it a strong contender. There’s a minor chance of nerfs, but it’s still a phenomenal spec.
Elemental and Enhancement Shaman
Both Elemental and Enhancement Shaman are great for different reasons. Elemental Shaman excels in AoE DPS, while Enhancement Shaman offers excellent funnel damage. Both specs are tanky and provide valuable buffs to the group.
B Tier DPS
Affliction Warlock
Affliction Warlock excels in specific AoE pulls but lacks in single-target damage. Its burst profile is fine, but it’s not as well-rounded as other specs.
Frost Mage
Frost Mage offers more overall DPS than Arcane but lacks in single-target efficiency. It’s a solid third DPS option but not top-tier.
Unholy Death Knight
Unholy DK excels in uncapped AoE damage but is less versatile than Frost DK. It’s still a solid choice but not as well-rounded.
Fury Warrior
Fury Warrior offers decent damage but has terrible utility. Its throughput is good enough to be a third DPS option, but it’s not a superstar spec.
Survival Hunter
Survival Hunter is the best of the Hunter specs, offering solid AoE damage. It’s not commonly seen but is a viable option.
Havoc Demon Hunter
Havoc DH is more or less fine in terms of output but lacks in utility. It’s a good choice if you need Chaos Brand in your group.

B- Tier DPS
Arms Warrior
Arms Warrior offers decent cleave damage but is a step behind Fury Warrior. It’s a competitive option but not top-tier.
Shadow Priest
Shadow Priest has recently received buffs, making it more competitive. However, its utility and single-target damage are lacking.
Balance Druid
Balance Druid offers competitive AoE damage but struggles in single-target scenarios. It’s likely to get buffed due to its poor raid performance.
Retribution Paladin
Similar to Balance Druid, Ret Paladin excels in AoE but lacks in single-target damage. It’s also likely to get buffed.
Marksmanship Hunter
MM Hunter offers good burst potential but is target-capped. It’s a fine choice but not top-tier.
Subtlety Rogue
Sub Rogue offers decent damage but is outperformed by Assassination Rogue. It’s a viable option but not the best.
C Tier DPS
Feral Druid
Feral Druid offers okay damage but is not phenomenal. It’s unlikely to be seen in high-end content.
Destruction and Demonology Warlock
Both specs have been significantly nerfed and lack the DPS output to be competitive. They may get buffed but are currently not great.
Outlaw Rogue
Outlaw Rogue is target-capped and lacks in AoE damage. It’s the worst of the Rogue specs but not unplayable.
Windwalker Monk
Windwalker Monk offers okay damage but is not competitive with higher-tier specs. It’s a fine choice but not great.
Devastation Evoker
Dev Evoker lacks in both tankiness and damage output. It’s not a great spec but not entirely unplayable.
D Tier DPS
Beast Mastery Hunter
BM Hunter is heavily gated by Basilisk Collar and lacks in AoE damage. It’s not a viable option in high-end content.
Fire Mage
Fire Mage has been significantly nerfed and lacks competitive damage. It’s almost certain to get buffed but is currently not viable.
