The Veil And Jakob Böhme
A strange number of allusions to an actual philosopher from the 17th century have been found in D2 lore. The writings of this Christian mystic and shoemaker could hold an important clue to understanding the origins of the franchise’s whole universe. His name was Jakob Böhme, and he profoundly influenced German idealism and Romanticism. It’s known that most of Bungie’s video games explore various profound, metaphorical themes in their plots. However, D2 is probably the first to draw such strong parallels.
Although many could argue that the Lightfall DLC’s central narrative lacked substance, fans have developed several theories concerning D2’s enigmatic Veil artifact. Many clues have appeared during missions and through lore drops. However, Bungie doesn’t seem too eager to reveal its lore’s most significant mysteries. It looks like they prefer for players to try and piece it together for themselves.
Maybe because of that, Reddit user HEISENB3RGx drawing a connection between D2’s lore and Jakob Böhme feels so significant. Allusions have been made about Böhme’s works along with the appearance of the Unveiling lore book, as it mentions a “shoemaker philosopher” as the individual who had discovered the truth of the universe. Now that Bungie’s artists have revealed the Veil’s side, the artifact seems to embody Böhme’s ideology further.
The design of The Veil seems quite intentional, as well as significant for D2’s current storyline, after fans discovered a holographic representation of it in the Avalon Exotic mission. In its post, HEISENB3RGx has pointed out that practically all of Destiny’s essential themes, including the Asphodelia flowers from the Black Garden and the sword of Law (also known as the Hive’s Sword Logic), can be found and adequately explained in Böhme’s conception of the universe.
This is evident in Freher’s representation of Böhme’s cosmology, which is seen in the last image. Using it, HEISENB3RGx pointed out that the scholar’s original schematics emphasize maintaining the heart (white or pale) at the center of the picture. This is arguably a connection to D2 The Winess’s goals, as the creature has repeatedly referenced a Pale Heart.
Now, a large part of the D2 fanbase has agreed that Böhme’s cosmology and philosophy are essential to comprehending what Bungie is attempting to express in Lightfall. The Veil’s original artwork for D2 explicitly notes that the artifact is meant to be a “window into the mind and memory of the universe,” thus, it appears that the title’s backstory will undoubtedly take a surprising turn before The Final Shape. Despite the circumstances, it is evident that Böhme’s diagram might have served as a source of inspiration for The Veil.
