Essential Information about Rise of the Angry Earth

On August 30th, Amazon Games, the dev team behind New World, announced the first major expansion to the game that is set to release tomorrow, October 3rd.

The first thing that you should know about it, is that the expansion is not free. It will cost $29.99 or if you don’t have the base game, you can purchase the bundle for $69.99.

The expansion will also kick off Season 3 which, naturally, will include a season pass with its own reward track. Apart from that, here are all new things that you can expect to see once the expansion hits the live servers:

  • Updated main story questline
  • Changes to open world PvP
  • QoL improvements – the removal of such item stats as Wards, Banes and Expertise
  • Addition of ridable mounts
  • New weapon type – Flail
  • … much more!

With that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at each of these points.

New Main Story

new story for new world
"First Light has fallen"

The new story questline sees The First Light – a starting settlement, from which all new players started their journey, succumb to new affliction – Angry Earth. The town is now surrounded in an impenetrable barrier and new adversaries called Beast Lords have appeared.

So, that’s the premise of the new story, but what has changed?

 Here’s what’s new:

  • Most importantly, lots of zones have been updated based on the community’s feedback. A few remianing ones will also be updated in later patches.
  • Starting zones where new players spawn have been changed to make it easier to group up with friends and do starting quests together

  • Quests will now provide optional objectives for both solo players or groups to make each playstyle be equally viable.

  • There is much more variety in objectives and things to do. This relates to quest objectives as well as new dynamic events, puzzles, unique interactions and much more.

  • Lots of new places to explore, new enemies to fight and gear to loot

My favorite part about the Revamped Starting Experience and main storyline has to be the story, quest, and cinematic changes. At first there was a need to rush to endgame ahead of everyone else. Now you can enjoy even better progression at your own pace.

Mounts Are Real!

ridable mounts in new world
Mounts are in the game!

In the upcoming “Rise of the Angry Earth” expansion for Amazon Games’ MMO, New World, players will be introduced to a new mounts system designed to facilitate faster travel throughout the game world. The introduction of mounts aims to change the player experience by offering a faster way to traverse the vast landscapes of Aeternum, providing an intermediary point between fast travel and walking.

These mounts can be summoned at any given time, offering increased speed, especially when traveling on roads. However, their use is restricted during expeditions. The game currently offers three types of mounts: horses, dire wolves, and lions. The choice of these animals is tied into the lore of the expansion. Each of these mounts can be uniquely customized with in-game skins, attachments, and even buff items that change the way they ride. Players can even give their mounts names and equip them with visual-only items like shields, flags, or a basket of fish for added personalization.

There’s also going to be a new Riding Trade Skill which players will be able to upgrade in order to increase their mount’s movement speed. The primary way to earn riding skill XP is by completing Mount quests, which include races or time trials. These quests challenge players to reach certain checkpoints within a given time, with two types of races available: tours and rallies. As players progress, they can earn other buffs for their mounts and get access to better kibble for their 4-legged friends.

In PvP scenarios, players should be cautious as any hit from another player will instantly dismount them, ensuring that mounts don’t unbalance PvP encounters. Additionally, for those looking for more customization options, armored mounts can be purchased from the in-game store and dyed using mount dyes.

The narrative backdrop for the introduction of this mounts system is centered around a character named Artemis. She takes control of Aeternum, leading to the transformation of First Light into the magical realm of the Elysian Wilds due to the fury of the Angry Earth. This upheaval awakens the formidable Beast Lords, who not only pose a new challenge for players but also hold the key to taming and riding the game’s animals.

Increased Level Cap and Gear Score

max level in new world
More power, more gear!

The max level has increased from 60 to 65 but it is far from the only thing that players will be able to work towards. On top of that you’ll get:

  • Increased maximum Gear Score – 700
  • Increased Trade Skills level cap – 250
    • Includes new gatherable, refinable and craftable items.
  • New Faction Quests and Higher Faction tier with new gear and items for rewards.

In the “Rise of the Angry Earth” expansion for New World, a new tier of gear rarity known as “Artifacts” has been introduced. These powerful weapons and armor pieces represent the pinnacle of equipment in the game. Players can obtain Artifacts through various means, including challenging end-game content, ensuring that they stand out both in terms of aesthetics and combat prowess. This addition aims to provide dedicated players with a new benchmark for equipment excellence in Aeternum.

In one of the recent videos, about the game, Davide Verfaillie, the creative director of New World, spoke about how players who perefer different activities would reach the new Gear Score cap.

It appears that by the end of the new storyline, most players will end up with Gear Score of around 640-650 or even more depending on how much players will explore along the way. At this Gear Score, players are available to participate in the so-called “end-game” content. For PvE players, this means participating in base-level expeditions. They will serve a great first step towards that 700 Gear Score cap.

Beyond these expeditions you will have a few options:

  1. Open-world content such as farming mobs – higher-lvl mobs will drop gear with up to 690 Gear Score. Named enemies and chests will give you items with up to 700 Gear Score.
  2. Mutations – expeditions with new modifiers applied to enemies will also give you better rewards.
  3. Corrupted portals give you caches upon completion which may include Gear Score 700 gear.

PvP players will want to stick to:

  1. Arenas and 20v20 Outpost Rushes (OPRs). Caches from these activities include gear with a wide range of Gear Score with the highest being 700.
  2. Influence v2 mechanic – a race for control of towns and other key points on the world map divided between the 3 warring facitons. Each race provides a cache with loot as well as a ton of XP.
  3. PvP reward track – contains named items as rewards as well as a guaranteed 690 Gear Score item every 10 levels.
    • Named items are acutally upgradable to 700.

Crafters will have two main ways to get to Gear Score 700:

  1. Prismatic Scarab Crafting – expensive and has a weekly cooldown, but guarantees Gear Score 700 gear with the exact perks that you want (all 3 perks determined by players).
  2. Cromatic Seal Crafting – cheaper option with a daily cooldown but only guarantees 2 perks instead of 3.

New Weapon - Flail

flail weapon in new world
Flail key concept art

The Flail is a unique addition to New World’s arsenal, offering a blend of melee and arcane capabilities. This one-handed weapon can be paired with an offhand shield, allowing players to harness arcane magic to enhance its attacks, buff allies, and debuff enemies. The Flail’s design emphasizes a balance between offense and defense, enabling the wielder to bolster their group’s effectiveness without compromising their offensive capabilities.

From a gameplay perspective, the Flail may not be the most damaging weapon, but it compensates with its survivability, support, and utility. Its attacks, whether they are swipes, thrusts, strikes, or magical AoEs, come with buffs or debuffs that modify their combat function. The weapon’s versatility is further highlighted by several passives and upgrades that function differently based on the type of shield equipped and the combat situation. This means players can tailor the Flail to their preferred playstyle. For instance, solo players might opt to skip certain support-focused attack upgrades to better equip themselves for survival.

In terms of stats, the Flail has a medium attack speed and is categorized as an extended melee weapon. It excels in providing buffs and debuffs. Its primary role is to offer support and tanking capabilities, with its strengths lying in survivability, utility, versatility, and defense. However, it may not be the best choice for high damage output or 1v1 combat scenarios.

The Flail’s damage primarily scales with Strength, but its utility and support attributes are linked to Focus. This means that while most of the Flail’s damage will scale to Strength, its healing and various support functions will scale exclusively with Focus. For comparison, the Flail and Shield combination scales 90% with Strength and 65% with Focus.

The weapon’s design also introduces unique mechanics. For instance, the Flail’s tip can extend during attacks, granting additional reach. It also introduces a new status effect called “Impairment,” which combines both damage over time and weaken effects.

The Flail can be paired with various weapons, depending on the player’s build and objectives. Some suggested weapon pairings include:

  • Flail / Life Staff: Focuses on self and group survival and support/healing.
  • Flail / Void Gauntlet: Offers a mix of healing, support, and damage.
  • Flail / Sword and Shield: Emphasizes tanking, self-survival, support, and drawing aggro.
  • Flail / War Hammer, Great Axe, Hatchet, or Greatsword: Serves as a secondary on damage-focused builds, adding survivability and support.

The Flail’s mastery is divided into two trees: Cleric and Bastion. The Cleric tree utilizes arcane magic to enhance attacks, buff and heal allies, and debuff enemies. Some notable abilities in this tree include Arcane Smite, Arcane Vortex, and Arcane Eruption. The Bastion tree, on the other hand, focuses on crowd control and defensive strategies to buff the user and support allies in combat. Key abilities in this tree include Barrage, Trip, and Warding Bludgeon.

In a video discussion titled “New World: Forged in Aeternum – Flail,” the design team delved deeper into the Flail’s creation. The weapon’s inception began years ago, initially envisioned as a whip. However, after numerous iterations, the team settled on the Flail, which combines elements of a whip with the added weight and impact of a flail. The weapon’s animation was a significant focus, with the Flail being the first weapon in New World to have animation on the weapon itself. This required the creation of a rig for the weapon, allowing for the animation of the chain and enhancing the overall feel and impact of the Flail in combat.

The Savage Divide - New Expedition

The Savage Divide key concept art

In the latest “Forged in Aeternum” episode, Rosie Strzalkowski and Darren McKinsey unveil the new Savage Divide expedition, located in the transformed Elysium Wilds territory of New World. This expedition stands out as it exclusively features beasts, such as gorillas with throwing mechanics, elusive chameleons, elemental mammoths, and armored dragons. The climax of the expedition is a challenging encounter with Mahatma, the mammoth Lord. Designing an all-beast expedition posed unique challenges for both the design and art teams. They had to ensure diverse combat mechanics and create distinct visual areas within the expedition. Despite its challenges, Savage Divide is designed to be more approachable for a broader range of players, with the most demanding gameplay reserved for mutators. This expedition, with its unique creatures and mechanics, is set to be a highlight in the upcoming “Rise of the Angry Earth” expansion.

New Heartrune Ability: Primal Fury

Primal Fury new ability
Primal Fury Heartrune Ability in action

The NEW HEARTRUNE ABILITY: PRIMAL FURY in New World is a powerful ability that allows players to tap into their primal instincts. When activated, players become “enraged,” staggering and dealing 150% heartrune damage to targets within a 3-meter radius. This enragement transforms the player into a hulking beast for a duration of 10 seconds. While in this beast form:

  • Light attacks deal 100% damage.
  • The heavy attack becomes a leap, dealing 120% damage and knocking down targets.
  • Players can use the heartrune again to end the beast mode prematurely, dealing 150% damage to all targets within a 3-meter radius.

This ability is bound to the item “Brutal Heartrune of Primal Fury,” which has a gear score of 625. The heartrune also comes with additional perks such as “Lasting Rage” and “Extending Claws.” It is a Bind on Pickup item, indicating that once a player picks it up, it cannot be traded or sold to other players.

This chart from steamdb.info shows the player count since the day of release until today.

Isn’t this excited? New World had an extremely poor reception when it was first released. Major, game-breaking bugs plagued the game and prevented even the most loyal fans from having a good time in the game. Some bugs were breaking the fragile economy of the game, while some bugs were straight up dangerous for players in terms of online security. Over the coming year or two, the devs did an outstanding job of essentially bringing the game back to life.

Actually the history of the game can be easily tracked by the chart that shows amount of players that played the game since the release and to this day. You could easily see how the game lost most of its player base but slowly regained them forming a community of loyal fans. What will happen to the game in future will be determined by how well its first expansion will be received.

We, at LFCarry.com, are excited for the game’s future.
