Monk Class Overview

Path of Exile 2 was announced nearly four years ago. The work on it has been enormous, and the game will still remain in development until summer next year. This expansion aims to be much more than just a new campaign. It offers all-new enemies, abilities, mechanics, and everything you’d expect from contemporary action RPGs.

During the ExileCon 2023 – Day 1 – Live Stream, we were treated to nearly 30 minutes of gameplay that showcased the flawless execution of the gameplay. It was an opportunity to witness firsthand the mesmerizing spectacle of the Monk’s flawlessly choreographed staff twirling melee attacks.

In POE1, we had one character class for each of the combinations of Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence. But looking at the design of POE2 though, we realised that many of the new skills we were trying to design just didn't really fit thematically with the existing classes that we have.

Monk Skills

There came a moment when the creators understood that replacing PoE1 with PoE2 wouldn’t work because they would be removing a much-loved game for many players. So they decided to preserve the two, with distinct mechanics, game balance, and leagues, while maintaining the same platform. So, with new mechanics for every attribute and combination it was just fitting to add some character classes.

The Monk is a melee warrior that favors mobility to physical power. The developers have made numerous changes to improve battle mobility. Almost every melee skill incorporates some form of movement built.

Killing Palm: This strike sets your opponent to be culled. Gamers acquire a power charge when an enemy dies. As several of the Monk’s skills deal with power charges, this is an excellent preparation skill. It also includes a built-in Dash forward to help players aim the skill exactly where they need it. The skill immediately locks onto the target and does some pathfinding across obstacles.

Falling Thunder: A great follow-up is Falling Thunder. This skill generates a relatively small lightning AOE in front of you with no power charge. With additional power charges, though, it becomes a larger AOE with a significant amount of extra projectiles capable of taking out a pack.

Falling Thunder, like other melee skills, allows your character to walk forward while executing it, allowing you to get into an advantageous position with no time penalty. You also have a specific period to redirect your target.

Whirling Assault: This skill does not deal much damage with each hit but sweeps a long distance and enables players to turn while performing it. You may get a few extra hits if you turn at the appropriate time. You can follow up with Killing Palm and finish the rest of the pack with Falling Thunder.

Wind Blast: This skill does not damage much but is helpful for CC. The blast blows adversaries away, forcing them back. Nevertheless, it will be less successful on more giant mobs.

Glacial Cascade: This cast produces a wave of moving ice right before you. It’s worth noting that most of the damage comes near the end of the wave rather than throughout. The ideal scenario is to contain the monster and then put the wave so it ends right at the monster. Hitting frozen mobs deals extra damage.

Ice Strike: While this skill does not deal much damage, three consecutive attacks creates a combo that has a considerably higher chance of freezing the target in place. It’s an excellent partner for Glacial Cascade.

A wave of Frost: A new strike with a built-in retreat; the player moves backward to toss out a chilly attack with a high possibility of freezing the mob. With the player further away from the monster, it can be combined with Glacial Cascade for massive damage.

Shattering Palm: This palm attack drops an ice bomb on the target, exploding when the target dies or is significantly injured. The explosion inflicts damage and has a high probability of freezing the mob — and possibly the boss.

Flicker Strike: It’s yet another Monk technique that drains power charges. This technique is an excellent finisher for a tough fight if you can get a power charge beforehand. This is because it teleports the character to an adjacent monster and briefly improves movement duration.
