Introducing Open Combat Missions

Modern Warfare 3, set to release on November 10, will continue the journey we embarked on in the previous game. The campaign will see Captain Price and Task Force 141 doing the best they can to stop the game’s antagonist, Vladimir Makarov, whose influence is rapidly expanding around the globe.

However, besides the well-known cinematic missions that always were quite linear, the game will offer a new type of those called Open Combat missions. In essence, these are semi-open world levels that take place in a sizable area and provide players entire freedom to accomplish the objective in any way they see fit. During such missions, you won’t be guided by the game and instead will have a choice of how you want to approach your adversaries and achieve your goal.

According to Associate Director of Level Design at Sledgehammer Games, Robert Pitts, who talked about the innovation in the Intel Drop video, the campaign will feature both traditional and Open Combat missions to deliver us a completely new experience. As was mentioned above, the latter will take players to open areas, such as the countryside or apartment complex, where it’s easier to try different strategies that suit their playstyle.

Moreover, although the missions will start with a set loadout, you’ll be able to find other equipment, like additional weapons and Supply Boxes, which allow you to change your approach or proceed with the one you already chose.

We knew we wanted a bit more opportunity for the player to craft their own experience

Robert Pitts also added that these missions grant you greater freedom of movement within the mission’s expanded borders in exchange for fewer checkpoints, giving you more chances to return to your mission infiltration and reconsider your tactics. Speaking of which, there are plenty of ways you can play those missions.

What Can You Do in Open Combat Missions?

Since these missions are not linear, you’re free to do whatever you want to complete the objectives, even if it means changing strategies in the middle of an action. The only limit is your imagination. Here are just a few examples from creators of what you can do during Open Combat missions:

  1. Stealth: Stay off the radar and avoid attracting enemies by approaching them directly or firing unsuppressed weapons. Yes, it might be difficult, but what is fun without a challenge, right?
  2. Guns a-Blazing: Dive into a robust assault featuring a multiplayer-style and Weapons free approach.
  3. Use Your Loadout: A campaign innovation, enjoy an expanded arsenal like Field Enhancements, Lifeline Kits, and Tactical Gear, letting you tailor your strategy on the battlefield.
  4. Pick Up Foe’s Arsenal: Use a diverse range of armaments, from firearms to equipment left behind by adversaries.
  5. Hunt and Gather: During missions, discover scattered gear, loot boxes, or the ability to switch loadout via a unique loadout crate.
  6. On Foot: Embrace the classic combat stance with your boots firmly planted.
  7. Parachuting, Parkour, and More: Reimagine your mission approach with a blend of vertical ascents and unconventional traversal techniques.
  8. Water Adventures: Just like in MW2, you can dive and swim in the water, using it as an advantage. Opt for stealthy underwater routes or craft an alternate path to an objective.
  9. Ride in Style: Multiple vehicle choices await. Use them for discreet relocations or a grand entrance to lure adversaries.
  10. Killstreaks and Interactable Items: Access a variety of killstreaks and utilize items like flammable gas canisters to throw at foes.

Remember that these are just a tiny part of what you can do in Open Combat missions, and you’re free to use varied strategies in any order you want. Given that adversaries will challenge you in many different ways, there’s no other choice than to fight them accordingly. So, don’t hesitate to improvise.

Examples of Campaign Open Combat Missions

Gora Dam

As you now know, half of the campaign missions will be the Open Combat ones. And while we wait for more details, we have info about two such missions, so let’s see what they are.

Gora Dam

In this mission, players get control of Simon “Ghost” Riley atop the Gora Dam in Verdansk (many may remember from 2019’s title) and are tasked with defusing a number of bombs strategically placed throughout the area, including the one on the moving truck. Players will have a variety of tools at their disposal to take on and complete the objective, including a fully loaded AR, a suppressed Sidearm, binoculars, and both lethal and tactical grenades. How exactly Ghost will complete this mission is completely up to you.

Downed Airliner

Another mission will take place after the crash of an airplane, where Task Force 141 is trying to stop Makarov’s soldiers from blaming another nation. There are patrols to avoid and hazards to navigate, and if you die, the game works like Groundhog Day and rewinds the time so you can try again using the knowledge you’ve gained.

The ability to replay is another distinguishing feature of Open Combat missions that allows you to try again using a different approach.
