Changes in Loot Drop Mechanisms
In WoW’s Dragonflight Season 2, players see fewer Very Rare items in the vaults. This phenomenon can be attributed to a few key factors. Firstly, the drop rate for Very Rare items has lowered to around 40% of a general item. Secondly, there is an increase in the number of bosses for a base vault, from 2 in Season 1 to 3 in Season 2. This expansion directly translates to a larger loot pool. Lastly, there’s an increase in the number of loot pieces per boss, from 1-3 pieces for bosses like Eranog and Primal Council to 3-4 for bosses like Kazzara, Amalgamation, and Assault in Season 2. Consequently, due to these changes, the likelihood of obtaining a Very Rare piece in the Great Vault has diminished significantly.
Deciphering the Season 2 Drop Rates
A compelling disclosure from a recent interaction with Morgan Day indicates an increase in the drop rates of Very Rare items during Season 2. Yet, it’s essential to remember that the spectrum of items a boss can drop has also grown proportionately.
At first glance, the enhanced drop rate is beneficial. However, with an expanded loot pool, the chance of securing a specific Very Rare item you desire could be quite similar to the odds encountered in Season 1.
To better illustrate this, let’s plunge into the statistical evidence from the prior season for added clarity:”
Season 1 Boss Drops
We acknowledge a margin of error in these estimates. However, they suggest that Very Rare items in Season 1 had approximately 50% the drop rate of any other item.
Taking Eranog as an example, which had 1 Very Rare item and 8 standard items, each slot had about an 11.76% drop chance for regular items and a 5.88% drop chance for the Very Rare item, the Eranog ring.
Considering four item drops on Mythic difficulty, our estimates suggest a 21.5% chance of getting at least one Eranog ring on each kill, in contrast to a 39.4% chance of obtaining any other specific item on a kill.
The Season 1 Vault Mystery
Regarding Season 1 Vaults, we’re in the dark as we don’t have concrete data, only anecdotal evidence. However, this player experience-based evidence suggests that many raiders, having done 2/8 Vault of the Incarnates runs, felt the drop rate for Very Rare items was considerably high. The speculation was rife that the drop rate for Very Rare items matched that of other items from the Great Vault.
So, how many Season 1 Vaults do you recall with a Very Rare item? For many players, the answer is quite a few!
Revisiting Season 2 Loot Drops: An In-depth Analysis of Aberrus Bosses
Just like in Season 1, we are evaluating the recorded loot drops by the Wowhead Looter for the bosses of Aberrus in Season 2. It’s important to note that these estimates include data from profession patterns and abnormal drops, so they’re not entirely accurate. The analysis doesn’t cover Mythic difficulty due to insufficient data.
Let’s delve into the drop rates of three bosses: Kazzara, the Hellforged; Rashok; and Neltharion. Their specific drops and averages are tabled below:
Season 2 Boss Drops
From the available data, it appears that the drop rate of Very Rare items is approximately 80% that of any other item in Season 2.
Consider Neltharion, who has three Very Rare items and seven regular items. The drop chance for each regular item is about 10.64%, and for each Class Trinket, it’s about 8.51%.
Given only two item drops on Mythic, our rough estimates suggest a 16.30% chance of getting at least one specific Class Trinket on each kill, versus a 20.15% chance of receiving any other specific item. These rates would change to 23.42% and 29.64%, respectively, with three item drops on Mythic in the coming week.
Understanding Season 2 Vault Drops
Thankfully, for Season 2 Vaults, we have some data courtesy of Seriallos from Raidbots. He shared data from 56,177 simulated Vaults, revealing that 3,770 Vaults had an Etchings of the Captive Revenant and 1,544 had a Screaming Black Dragonscale (Very Rare). These items were chosen as any spec can loot them and are off the first boss, making them likely to appear in every Vault. From this sample, only 41% of Very Rare items were looted compared to regular items. Hence, we can reasonably estimate the drop chance of Very Rare items in the Vault to be around 40% of a typical item.
Consider the Devastation Evoker as an instance. With 28 items on the regular loot table and 3 Very Rare items, excluding Tier, each normal item has approximately a 3.4% chance of appearing in each slot, and each Very Rare item has a 1.36% chance (assuming the 40% drop rate is accurate). This leads to a 9.86% chance of at least one slot containing a specific normal item and a 4.02% chance of at least one slot containing a specific Very Rare item in three Vault slots. If Tier items also factor into the calculation, the odds would be even lower than 9.86% and 4.02% per item.
Delving Deeper into 'Very Rare' Loot for Dragonflight Season 2
Morgan Day recently provided valuable insights into the mechanics of “Very Rare” items during Maximum’s Interview.
In his discussion, Morgan touched on some important points:
Morgan Day said:
The other major thing that we made an adjustment to with Season 2 is, how do you get them? We increased the chance to get them off the bosses, like when you kill the creature and loot the corpse they’re a lot more common there, but then we adjusted the tuning of the drop rate from other sources like [the] Great Vault, some of the boxes you get from the Weekly Events so they were less likely to come from those sources. Overall, they’re still very rare, we just shifted the source of where you’re going to get them from. It’s too soon to say if Very Rare loot is something we would carry into future expansions. We still really like the concept and still feel like it’s hitting a lot of our goals and there are still problems, but the problems that we’ve identified, we think those are solvable and we’re going to continue to make adjustments into Season 3 with that.“
Boss Drops
Morgan Day notes an increase in the drop rate of Very Rare loot, which seems accurate, shifting from 50% to 80%. However, considering more drops per Boss (crucial in a Master Loot world), it seems to balance out. In Season 2, the Very Rare item, “Screaming Black Dragonscale,” shows a drop rate of 20%, as per our records. Other Very Rare items are dropping at less than 16%, which is actually lower than the ~17% drop rates from the Vault of Incarnates in Season 1.
So, even though the drop rate for Very Rare items has gone up, the overall likelihood of encountering that Very Rare item from the Boss may stay constant compared to Season 1, thanks to more items on the loot table.
