The end boss of the Cathedral of Light Capstone dungeon is one of the toughest enemies in the game, so it takes skill and good strategy to defeat him. And to help you with the latter, we prepared this guide that covers the Curator’s abilities and the best tactics you can use to beat it. So, get ready; we have plenty to deal with!
How to Prepare for the Fight with the Curator?
Cathedral of Light Capstone dungeon that’s located in Kyovashad, in the Fractured Peaks, is an activity that becomes available as soon as you complete the Diablo 4 story campaign. Clearing it will unlock World Tier 3 for you. However, we don’t recommend diving into it right away as you’ll be below level 50. Since the dungeon doesn’t scale to your level and all enemies are fixed at 50, it’s better to upgrade your character to at least the said mark. That way, you’ll have a better chance to succeed. Nevertheless, no one will stop you if you decide to start the Diablo Cathedral of Light at a level below 50.
Another thing you should do is craft Elixirs. The ones you should focus on are Elixir of Undead-Slaying because you will have to deal with many undead skeletons in the second half of a fight, Elixir of Assault, and Third Eye Elixir. But since those don’t stack, you must choose just one of the aforementioned that you think will aid you more during the battle.
On top of that, pay attention to gear as well. For this encounter, you can equip gear with a perk that has increased armor or opt for something that provides bonus damage when you’re under crowd-control effect. Additionally, you can equip a perk or skill that will enhance your mobility as the boss has an attack that affects it, making you vulnerable to others of its abilities. Also, you can equip something to increase your attack speed.
Furthermore, if you have slots on your gear, you can insert gems into it to further enhance it. Thus, focus on gems like Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Skull, and Topaz, as they will give you more damage and armor.
These are all the main preparations you can do before you face the Curator. And with that being said, let’s proceed to the boss’s abilities and tactics you should use.
How to Defeat the Curator?
The Curator is an aggressive boss who likes to keep you distracted with several abilities and hits hard. You can use its slow movements to get behind it whenever you can to deal some damage. Furthermore, its Stagger meter fills pretty fast, so the best thing to do here is to use crowd control abilities to freeze, stun, and burn it to speed up the process and use the Ultimate ability to deal massive damage. During the fight, the Curator will summon multiple adds, so you can split up the duties with someone taking care of the boss while others are focusing on its helpers.
The boss’s primary attack is Scythe Slash, which is especially dangerous when you stand in front of the Curator. So, in order to avoid the damage, use movement skills, or if you have a short-range build, use Armor/Shield effects to handle the attack.
In the early stages of the encounter, the Curator will also attack with a Spectral Slam that creates five lines you need to dodge. You can avoid them by standing between the lines or behind the boss. Later, the attack will become more severe, with the Curator creating three lines of damage in front of him, leaving you only seconds to dodge them. During this attack, the boss will hit with the Spectral Slam three times and then teleport, repeating the action a few times in a row. Your main goal here is to pay attention and change position as fast as you can before each attack. Otherwise, two hits with this attack will kill you.
Throughout the fight, the boss will summon Skeleton minions – the regular ones and Ballistas. The latter are quite dangerous as they spawn all over the arena and shoot you with almost impeccable accuracy, so kill them as quickly as possible. Watch for the telltale shine from arrows that indicates that they’re about to shoot to be aware of when their attack will take place and avoid it. Then stand behind them and use a powerful single-target skill.
This is when dividing duties will help, as you have players who deal with the boss and those who focus on Ballistas. The regular Skeletons will interfere with your fight with the Curator, so it’s better to take them down fast as well.
In addition, the Curator will shoot Homing Skulls at you, which are hard to dodge. Fortunately, they don’t do that much damage, so you can tank one or two of them. But you can still try and avoid them by moving forward, then back, or from side to side with fast precision, or using Mobility skills.
Furthermore, the boss will launch Cyclones that move across the arena in random directions, dealing damage and reducing the vision of those who touch it. Avoid them at all costs, as they are deadly in combination with Bone Walls.
The Bone Walls is a two-phase attack. At first, they appear around the room, making it harder for you to move. Later, these walls begin to explode, damaging you, so you should be close to the outer walls in order to avoid it.
The key to defeating the Curator is to focus less on adds and more on Staggering, as the longer the battle lasts, the more crowded the room will become. So, the enemies you should pay close attention to, besides the boss, are Ballistas, as others don’t deal much damage. This is the strategy you can stick to.
Once you beat the boss, you’ll get rewards, including:
- World Tier 3: Nightmare Unlocked
- Gold
- Diablo 4 Legendary items
How to Fix the Curator Bug
Unfortunately, there’s a bug that can occur when you’re battling the boss. During the fight, when its health reaches 10% or 5%, it can disappear along with the Skeletons, though the sounds will remain. But luckily for us, there are workarounds that might fix this. Here are some of them:
- Try to finish the fight as quickly as possible, as a long battle increases the chance of this bug occurring
- Try not to use Necromancer’s Summons, as it might possibly lead to this bug, too
- Switch to World Tier 1 and then back to World Tier 2
- Close the game and enter it again to start the fight over
- Invite your friend to the party when the bug will take place and exit the game. After that, enter the game and join your friend’s party. If you’re lucky enough, you can continue the fight right where you left it.
Though there’s no guarantee that any of this will work, they are still worth trying if you experience the bug.
