Destiny 2: The Double-Edged Sword of Player Buffs and Nerfs

In the ever-evolving universe of Destiny 2, change is the only constant. The latest update from Bungie, the game’s developer, is a testament to this. A long-awaited improvement has finally arrived, but it carries an unexpected twist. This duality of progress and setback paints a fascinating picture of the game’s evolution.

The Long-Awaited Buff

In a recent blog post, Bungie announced a significant change to Destiny 2’s economy. The game’s notoriously finicky masterwork materials, Ascendant Shards (or “golf balls,” as they are colloquially known) and Ascendant Alloys, are set to see increased resource caps. The cap for Ascendant Shards and Ascendant Alloys will increase from 10 to 30, while Enhancement Prisms will see their cap rise from 50 to 100.

This change is a welcome one for the Destiny 2 community, which has been calling for increased resource caps on these endgame materials for quite some time. The increased inventory cap will undoubtedly make managing these resources easier for players.

The Unexpected Nerf

However, this buff comes with a nerf. While the inventory cap is increasing, the account-wide cap is decreasing. Players will no longer have the option to store excess materials at the Postmaster. This change means that if players have full stacks of these materials in their inventory, they won’t receive any more of the items until they are below the cap.

Previously, players could hold 10 golf balls in their inventory and stash an additional 10 in the Postmaster on each of their three characters, effectively giving them a theoretical cap of 40. With the new changes, this workaround will no longer be possible.

The Impact on Players

This change has a significant impact on the player community. On the one hand, the increased inventory cap is a welcome change that will make managing resources easier. On the other hand, removing the ability to store excess materials at the Postmaster effectively reduces the total number of resources players can hold at any given time.

However, it’s worth noting that according to Bungie, less than 1% of players hold more than the new increased caps of these materials at their Postmaster. So while this change may impact a small number of players, most of the Destiny 2 community will likely see this as a positive change.
