Understanding and Maximizing Your Power Level in Destiny 2
Think of Power Level in Destiny 2 as your Guardian’s supercharged muscle meter. It’s the sum of all your equipped gear’s stats, and it dictates how much damage you can dish out and take. The higher your Power Level, the easier it is to crush those pesky enemies and tackle the game’s toughest challenges.
Raising your Power Level is like leveling up your hero in an epic saga. Want to raid with the best? Crush Nightfalls? Dominate in Trials of Osiris? You need a high Power Level. Without it, you might as well be swinging a foam sword in a real battle. So, power up!

The Final Shape Power Level Changes
We eagerly await “The Final Shape” expansion, so let’s dive into the exciting changes coming to Destiny 2’s power level system.
Destiny 2 The Final Shape Level Caps
First, let’s discuss the level caps that will be active from the release of “The Final Shape”:
New Character: Power Level 1900
- Starting Power Level for new characters
Soft Cap: Power Level 1940
- Sources: Rares, Legendaries (non-sunset), Exotics, Vendors
Hard Cap: Power Level 1990
- Sources: Activities with Powerful Gear rewards, Prime Engrams
Pinnacle Cap: Power Level 2000
- Sources: High-level Nightfalls, Raids, and other pinnacle sources
These level caps define the progression path for Guardians, guiding them through different stages of power leveling and preparing them for endgame challenges.
Fireteam Power System
“The Final Shape” introduces the new Fireteam Power system. When you group up with other players to form a fireteam, the team will be assigned a collective Power Level. The player with the highest Power Level becomes the Power Leader, and the Power Levels of the other members will be adjusted to be 5 levels below the Power Leader. For example, if the Power Leader has a Power Level of 2000, the other members will have a Power Level of 1995. This system impacts the difficulty of activities, but individual rewards are still based on each player’s original Power Level.
Cross-Character Power Progression
Starting with “The Final Shape,” your Power Level will be shared across all characters on your account. This means rewards will be based on the highest Power Level among your characters. For instance, if your Titan has the highest Power Level, switching to your Warlock will still allow you to receive loot based on your Titan’s Power Level. This change streamlines progression and rewards, making it easier to gear up multiple characters.
Power Disabled and Power Enabled Activities
The expansion also brings Power Disabled and Power Enabled activities:
Power Disabled Activities: These can be played at any Power Level, and the difficulty remains constant regardless of your Power Level. Examples include:
- Story Campaigns (normal and legendary)
- Seasonal story missions
- Free-roam destinations
- Crucible
Power Enabled Activities: Here, your Power Level matters. Surpassing the Activity Power Cap makes the activity easier, while being below the cap makes it harder. Examples include:
- Vanguard playlists
- Nightfalls
- Seasonal activities
- Exotic Mission Rotators
- Trials of Osiris
- Raids
- Dungeons
Each activity has a specific Power Cap, correlating with difficulty levels:
- Power Cap 1945: Standard difficulty
- Power Cap 1995: Advanced difficulty
- Power Cap 2005: Expert difficulty
- Power Cap 2010: Master difficulty
- Power Cap 2020: Grandmaster difficulty
These changes aim to balance the difficulty and rewards of various activities, ensuring a challenging yet fair gameplay experience for all Guardians.
