Call of Duty 2023 was supposed to be a premium installment for Modern Warfare 2, however, it has been decided that it’ll now be launched as a standalone release. Additionally, the plot of MW2 will be continued in it, and the gameplay will maintain its multiplayer content. That is according to a story published by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
A Break In The Pattern
This makes a shift on COD’s typical pattern of cycling through its numerous sub-brands in preparation for the next installment. Only one year has passed since MW2’s previous release.
Sledgehammer Games, which was previously in charge of developing COD Vanguard, is apparently working on developing the upcoming release. They are also being supported by MW’s primary developer, Infinity Ward.
It is anticipated that the gameplay will feature maps and modes from its predecessor, which makes us wonder if the userbase among players which have 2-2 and players who don’t will be divided or not.

Bloomberg’s Announcement
It is an odd choice for Activision to release a second MW game in such a short time, as the business has received complaints before for launching new content too soon and with too little continuous support. Naturally, Activision additionally has Warzone 2.0 to rely on for profit even though its numbers have decreased since its release.
Early this year, Bloomberg announced that Activision was thinking about abandoning its rigorous yearly launch plan for the Call of Duty video game series, which had been maintained since 2005. After a month, it was reported that this had, in fact, been agreed upon in the company, and this could have a relation with Activision’s unhappiness with Vanguard’s poor sales in 2021.

Later on, Activision released an announcement, stating:
An exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year and beyond.
However, it did not categorically state that the Call of Duty to be released in 2023 wasn’t going to be a full game.
The other COD studio, Treyarch, owned by Activision, has been quiet on this issue. However, players are looking forward to their Black Ops sub-brand’s new installment in 2024.
There has been some very eventful news surrounding Activision lately, as besides the new installment, Microsoft has put an eye on the company, expecting to acquire it for the price of $68.7 billion. A hearing was set to settle the deal despite the regulator’s reluctance.
