Tree New Quests
In the files of update 10.1, a series of three quests can be found, which, apparently, are a continuation of the storyline of Adamanthia from update 10.0.7. However, instead of a plot description, these quests have only notes from the developers concerning the objectives, context, and descriptions of the lore. They are the following:
Our Destiny
The first new quest in the Adamanthia storyline is Our Destiny. It has the quest text shown below:
“Evokers only. Upon login you are toasted with NEW SPECIALIZATION REMEMBERED toast. This quest appears in your mailbox sent by Emberthal asking you to go to the Forbidden Reach. The mystery that was uncovered in 10.0.7 (not required for this quest) is about to unfold and she needs your help to talk Ebyssian down from a course of action she sees as folly.”
This quest appears to be a significant piece of lore that is linked to various activities from Patch 10.0.7. The phrase “New specialization remembered” is very explicit, enough so we can assume that a third Evoker spec could be on the horizon.
The High Creche
The description of the next quest, The High Creche, doesn’t have any really interesting details:
“This is an RP interaction quest where we learn that Ebyssian has already started to release Adamanthia. Emberthal thinks this is a bad idea while Ebyssian wants to at least try and give this dragon a chance. Interact with the 4 doohickies while they talk, each one bringing down the energies holding the dragon in place.”
The Contingency
The third and last quest in the series, The Contingency, has a more interesting description:
“As the energies release, Adamanthia is coming to and is driven mad by torture of ages. Help buy Ebyssian time to subdue her magically. Boss fight. Boost/heal Ebyssian and Emberthal (most efficient method) or throw damage on Adamanthia. High flavor fight, lots of banter.”
In addition to the typical option of killing an enemy, the quest also offers to heal or buff allies. At the moment, Evokers don’t have a lot of options to buff allies: they can heal them, but not help with a significant increase in damage. This may hint at some new Evokers’ abilities that they may very well practice in this storyline.
Third Evoker Spec Interview
In a recent interview, video content creator Towelliee asked the developers about the possibility of a tank spec for Evokers, and this is what Associate Game Director Morgan Day had to say:
“I mean we’ve never really added a spec so, I can’t really speak to that. You know when we’re talking about Evokers, we really wanted to add a ranged DPS spec, like that was the goal and they’ve got the big old wings so there’s lots of discussions about what that would look like in melee range and stuff like that so… Tanks were discussed in the early days when Evokers were a glimmer in our eyes.”
Judging by the response, the developers won’t be going for a tank or melee spec, so it is hardly worth hoping for them. However, the possibility of a brand new ranged DPS specialization seems to be still on the table.
What Could This New Spec Be Like?
One can easily imagine a unique support spec in the spirit of a Bard-like class, whose character is considered a fighter (DPS), but does little damage himself, and instead increases the power of his allies to compensate.
This can be done both by directly buffing party members with bonuses like Power Infusion and mini-Bloodlust, or by weakening opponents with negative effects like the old-fashioned Sunder Armor and Curse of the Elements. This is a widely spread class in other video games, such as Diablo 3 or Lost Ark. So the idea of it being implemented in WoW is quite interesting.
Other Hints About A New Evoker Spec
The community is excited about the idea of a new Evoker Spec coming in patch 10.1, and whether they are tanks or healers, they are actively looking for more hints. After the discovery of the quests explained above, a Scottishwanderer, a Dragonflight player, decided to dig through the 10.1 files for additional clues and found a couple of interesting things. In short:
- A new category of Evoker spells has appeared – Jolt. Among the current class specs, there is nothing directly related to lightning or electricity.
- In the “SpellEmpowerStage” table, which gathers all Empowered Evoker Spells, there are as many as 36 new entries, a third of the total (almost all the other entries in it are devoted to already existing specs). All of these new entries are currently not tied to any spell.
- There’s a new table that lists the spells’ range increase as it gets stronger, and none of the current Evoker skills work that way.
- Several new spells have appeared, one of them (Emerald Infusion) possesses the prefix Emerald, typical for Green Evoker Spells, and another one (Azure Prowess) has the prefix Azure, typical for Blue Evoker Spells. You can check their descriptions below:
Emerald Infusion – Infuse yourself with Emerald Power, healing yourself for 20% and 10% of your maximum health over 10 sec. (Instant, 45-sec cooldown).
Iron Roots – Raising their shield the Dracthyr protects their allies within 10 yards, reducing their damage received by 90%.
Azure Prowess – Empowers an ally, increasing their damage done by 25%. (1.5-sec cast, 30 yd range).
Neltharion Voice Lines
Furthermore, some players claim to have found another hint in the voiced dialogues of Neltharion, in which the Earth-Wander himself calls out to his Scalecommanders: Sarkareth, Viridia, and Emberthal. Apparently, he left these words long before his final fall into madness, and they sound like this:
“You three shall be the examples all Dracthyr will follow.
Sarkareth, my devastator, you shall rend your foes with the powers of the Red and Blue Dragonflight.
Viridia, my preserver, you shall heal our allies with the graces of Green and Bronze Dragonflights.
And Emberthal, you will wield the essence of the Black Dragonflight to augment all those around you with my power.
By my command, kneel and obey.”
It’s interesting to note that Neltharion specifically mentions both Evoker specs. We also gain some insights through his remarks:
- Sarkareth, leader of the Ebon Scales, is Neltharion’s devastator.
- Also, Viridia, leader of the Healing Wings, is his preserver.
- He makes no mention of the Dark Talons and the Obsidian Warders (which joined the Horde and the Alliance respectively). But he speaks about Scalecommander Emberthal, who leads the Adamant Vigil.
Here’s what the Edict: The Adamant Vigil says about the Adamant Vigil:
“The Adamant Vigil
This weyrn shall be the eyes and ears of the black dragonflight and the legions of dracthyr.
Where our enemies tread, you will find them. Where our armies fly, it will be your guidance that directs their talons. Learn the weaknesses of our foes and amplify the strength of our allies.
Only the most bold, most cunning, and most gifted commanders shall join the ranks of the Adamant Vigil. This weyrn shall be granted unprecedented authority to act on its own initiatives, and shall answer to only Scalecommander Emberthal and the Earth-Warder.”
Both Neltharion’s words and the edict’s description speak of the same thing: the Adamant Vigil’s assignment in battle will be to buff their allies with the help of the Black Dragonflight, as well as learn the weaknesses of their enemies.
So, concerning the gameplay, this seems to confirm the upcoming presence of a support spec, with both the ability to strengthen their comrades and debuff their foes in the data-mined quests. This is something completely new for World of Warcraft, which makes it an all the more exciting possibility.
Scalecommander Emberthal
Returning to the lore, it is impossible not to mention Scalecommander Emberthal. After a centuries-old sleep, she woke up to find she was the only survivor of her weyrn. The same weyrn that should “strengthen their allies”, potentially representing the third specialization of the Dracthyr.
Because of these tragic events, Emberthal withdrew into herself. During the Dragon Isles storyline campaign and the 10.0.7 update event in the Forbidden Land, she gradually begins to come to her senses and more and more actively interacts not only with the heroes of Azeroth but also with other weyrns.
She is the only Dracthyr left alive and has all the knowledge necessary to teach her powers. She could find a new purpose in doing so. All Dracthyrs were made in a laboratory by Neltharion, but they weren’t designed for a specific weyrn. Instead, they learned abilities, thanks to which they ended up in one or another weyrn. The strongest of them all is Evokers, according to Edict: Evoker and Edict: Weyrns:
“Edict: Weyrns
All dracthyr shall be assigned to a weyrn that best matches their skills.
Each weyrn is focused on mastering a particular aspect of warfare. Attackers, defenders, healers, tacticians, and infiltrators – together, these units form the ultimate army.
Every weyrn shall be under the authority of a scalecommander, a dracthyr chosen and groomed for the position by the Earth-Warder himself.
Members of a weyrn will become as close as clutch mates. It is a bond that shall never be broken, forged of duty and honor in service to dragonkind.”
Neltharion’s Experiments
Let’s not forget that the name of the new update is Embers of Neltharion, so, the Earth-Warder will most probably be featured more often than not.
We will enter his ancient laboratory, Aberrius, to discover experiments thousands of years old, and learn more about the Black Dragonflight. Even after falling into madness, Nelfarion and his father Deathwing continued to engage in experiments. They both resorted to Augmentation, as well as combining the power of different dragonflights into one, creating creatures such as Ultraxion.
There is also evidence that before bringing out the Dracthyrs, Neltharion conducted similar experiments a long time ago. In one of the raid battles we will encounter three of them:
- Experiment 4
- Experiment 147
- Experiment 328
Only the last one can be somehow compared to the Dracthyrs we currently know.
Conclusion
These are all really interesting findings, however, none of them give a clear signal of a third Evoker spec coming in the future. Would we get a third Dracthyr spec in update 10.1, either through Embertal’s training or through the result of a successful experiment on Neltharion’s notes on our Dracthyr hero? One way or another, we can conclude many hints are supporting this theory.
Of course, there is also a chance that the developers will twist this into something less significant for both the lore and the gameplay. All of these spells may be simply meant for NPCs, raid mechanics, or special quests or tasks. However, the community is already unstoppable with their theories: they want both a Dracthyr tank spec and the implementation of a Dracthyr “bard,” capable of buffing allies and debuffing enemies. Only time will tell if this new Evoker spec will become a reality or not.
