On August 15, the Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn posted a 15-minute video on X to fill fans in on the studio’s plans for the game. During his monologue, Joe Blackburn talked about the upcoming Destiny 2 Showcase, Crucible, and armor. The reason why he chose the last two topics for discussion might be a response to the fans’ outcry, as players felt that PvP and armor issues have been ignored for a while. Well, now, according to the game director, they won’t be.
So, with that being said, here’s everything you need to know from this update.
A Few Words About Destiny 2 Showcase
We’re all excited about this event, as it should unveil details about the future content, including Season 22 and The Final Shape expansion. So, according to the game director, during the Showcase, we should expect news about the upcoming updates, a discussion about how the live service will evolve after the last DLC is released, and Q&A. Surely, a lot will be revealed then, and we will make sure to cover everything important in our future articles.
Plans for Crucible
Apart from the Showcase, Joe Blackburn also spoke about the devs’ strategy for Crucible. Recently, the game’s team has been focused on the following aspects:
- Sandbox balance, such as ensuring Strand is in a good position for PvP and is in harmony with the rest of the Crucible
- Releasing two weapon balance updates per season, one at the beginning and another around the mid-season
- Updating PvP ritual weapon pools when each season starts
- Producing one brand-new map and additional reprised map ports annually
Now, the plans for this mode are shifted, about which Joe Blackburn spoke in detail.
Maps
The devs’ strategy for those is to release a single map pack available for all players instead of a slow rollout of one map in 2024. The plan is to move away from standalone experiences, where one map is meant to fit a wide variety of modes and gameplay styles. With this new approach, the devs may release several maps simultaneously, making for a more exciting and varied PvP experience.
Modes
Besides the maps, the developers’ team felt the need to ramp up their strategy on maps to provide us with a truly fresh Crucible experience. Thus, Season 22 will introduce two new additions:
- Checkmate – a gunplay-focused modifier that will be available for multiple modes. We’ve been asking for this since the original Destiny, and now we finally get it, which will be rolling out throughout the next season.
- Relic is a new mode that progresses from mastery of the game’s fundamentals to increasingly relic plays and then becomes a true Mayhem-type experience. It will launch at the beginning of the new season.
Core playlists
According to Joe Blackburn, there were obstacles, such as bugs, that prevented the devs from moving some Labs and Iron Banner game modes from the past year into the core PvP playlist. To not wait any longer, they decided to accept that there were some issues that couldn’t be fixed right away and will finally move those modes into the playlist. So, expect to see these modes in the core playlist soon.
Competitive Division
Apart from the plans mentioned above, the devs also intend to change the way points are gained and lost in Competitive. The current weighting of individual MMR is too high, making the number of points gained or lost unpredictable. To fix this, the team will simplify the system so that winning and losing matters more. On top of that, they want Competitive to have more modes the players like (such as Countdown Rush) and fewer of those they don’t (like Rift).
The Future of Armor
Alongside the Crucible update, Joe Blackburn also mentioned armor and sets they are planning to add to the game. There are multiple “visual categories” of armor in the game, so let’s take a look at them to better understand what category the devs are working on.
- Aspirational armor: Obtained from raids, dungeons Destiny 2, and Trials of Osiris.
- Eververse armor: Can be purchased for Silver or Bright Dust and allows players to experiment with their looks.
- Narrative armor: armor shown in our trailers, Season Pass armor, and campaign armor.
- Rituals and blues: Earned from Vanguard, Crucible, and Gambit.
In 2022, the main focus of the creators was the aspirational armor. Since this content is challenging, the team wanted to reward players with armor that was worth all the effort. Thus, we got those awesome looks from Root of Nightmares raid, Spire of the Watcher, and other aspirational content.
Such focus also resulted in fewer ritual armor sets being added to the game. As you may have guessed, the devs will shift their focus on such sets. That way, they will convert an Eververse armor set from Season 22 into the ritual one that players can earn before the season ends. Moreover, we should expect a new ritual set to be released alongside The Final Shape.
