It’s time to see what 2023 has to offer. What characters will we get, and what changes is Riot planning? We just know we are receiving a CGU, an ASU, and 2 new champions. So let’s review what Riot has disclosed up until now!
Naafiri The Huntress
This upcoming character will be a mid-lane assassin and Darkin champion named Naafiri. The teaser depicts her possessing a very distinctive swarm or pack mechanic. She is a huntress that, upon waking up, is overcome by the desire to find her Darkin brethren. Additionally, she appears to possess more than one body, as Riot Lexical says:
Her newfound body... or bodies... seem like a criet twist of fate at first, but they prove useful for locating her fellow Darkin and as a source of wisdom.
Many have supported the theory that she will be a wolf/dog champion, setting her alongside the few other creature champions Riot has created. Most people assumed that spot would be taken by be Bel’Veth in 2022; however, she still looks more human than anything else. Based on various rumors, Naafiri is expected to be a monster champion with few to no human traits.
When Will Naafiri Be Released?
LoL typically puts out a huge summer event in June-July, so Naafiri will probably be out before that. The Star Guardian event started with Patch 12.13 a year ago, which means we could anticipate something similar in 2023.
On the 8th of June, 2023, Riot Meddler talked on Reddit about when Naafiri would make her debut. He said the character should be on the LoL PBE server by the end of June. Patch 13.14’s PBE cycle is set to launch on the 27th of June. Typically, content from the PBE is launched one patch later. However, it may take some additional time for Champions to do so.
Therefore, if Riot keeps to the schedule Meddler suggested, Naafiri will show up on the live server in Patch 13.14 /13.15. This would be around the middle of July or the beginning of August.
Briar - New Jungle Champion
Riot is currently focused on a jungle champion, yet nothing substantial has been stated about them yet. Players think this will be an actual vampire champion and believe they might be tied to Noxus somehow.
Riot August, who is overseeing this champion’s development, is the reason why fans think it could very well be a vampire. He has said more than once that he hopes to introduce to Summoner’s Rift a vampire champion who isn’t Vladimir.
The latest developer blog also gave more information about this hero. She is going to be a woman champion whose hunger can’t be stopped. She appears to have gone crazy from hunger for a while but is currently recovering.
Briar will serve as a skirmisher in the jungle, as the concept of a fiercely hungry champion was already made for Naafiri. Following this, it was determined to employ it for a skirmisher, and the idea ended up in Briar’s kit.
This Mid Lane Mage Might Become the Most Exceptional Champion Ever
Riot has also said there will be a new mid-lane mage that wields the power of art. This doesn’t seem an entirely novel idea for a champion. Evidence shows that Riot had been thinking about this previously, but because of the limitations, they didn’t release a champion with such an art feature until now.
At first, the team intended to create a mage who could quite literally draw their skills. We can’t say for sure if Riot will take this route, but we don’t think it’s very likely. The Roadmap, which additionally showed Briar’s name, said that this champion would come from Ionia. Aside from that, we only know a little about this mid-lane hero, he remains a mystery for now.
A Freljord Huntress Coming To The Scene?
A different character has also been the subject of several gossip and speculation. It is a Freljord top-lane huntress. She is also set to employ a novel and distinctive weapon that Riot has designed for the world of Runeterra. We don’t know much about her, but if these reports are accurate, we expect she is as happy and pleasant as Braum.
What About Skarner's Rework?
The LoL players picked Skarner as the following champion to get a VGU. Riot seems to have been busy making the upgrades to Udyr launched earlier in 2022, so they haven’t said much about what Skarner might be like in 2023.
