Enhance Your Gear in Dragonflight Season 2: Spark of Shadowflame Explained

The Spark of Shadowflame is a new essential reagent introduced in Patch 10.1 Dragonflight, allowing players to craft and upgrade Epic Quality Gear throughout Season 2. This powerful item replaces Season 1’s Spark of Ingenuity, so it’s crucial for players who want to optimize their gear in the new season.

Earning Your First Spark of Shadowflame

Your initial Spark of Shadowflame is acquired through the Campaign Tutorial Quest, Power Unified. After completing the Zaralek Cavern introduction, you can pick up this quest from Examiner Tae’shara Bloodwatcher inside Loamm, the central town in Zaralek Cavern. The quest requires you to find a Splintered Spark of Shadowflame and turn it in. In return, you’ll receive two Splintered Sparks of Shadowflame, which can be combined to create your first Spark of Shadowflame. There are currently two ways to earn a Splintered Spark of Shadowflame:

  • Weekly Renown Quest: Complete the A Worthy Ally: Loamm Niffen quest to earn 1500 Renown with the Loamm Niffen faction and receive a Scentsational Niffen Treasure. This treasure can contain various items, including a Splintered Spark of Shadowflame if you have yet to receive one that week.
  • Weekly PvP Quest: Participate in various Proving PvP Quests available inside the Gladiator’s Refuge in Valdrakken, such as Proving in Battle, Proving in Skirmishes, and Proving in Arenas. Upon completion, you’ll receive a Malicia’s Hoard, which can also contain a Splintered Spark of Shadowflame if you have not received one that week.

Earning Additional Sparks of Shadowflame

To earn more Sparks of Shadowflame, follow the same methods mentioned above. Remember that you can only obtain one Splintered Spark of Shadowflame weekly from a Scentsational Niffen Treasure or a Malicia’s Hoard. Players will need two Splintered Sparks of Shadowflame to make a full Spark, meaning you’ll earn an additional Spark of Shadowflame every two weeks indefinitely.

Left: A Worthy Ally: Loamm Niffen that rewards Scentsational Niffen Treasures. | Right: Proving in Battle that rewards Malicia's Hoard.

Availability Schedule for Sparks of Shadowflame

To help you plan your character’s progression, here’s a schedule outlining when the first five Sparks of Shadowflame will be available. Remember that these dates are based on Tuesdays, so you may need to adjust them slightly to fit your region. Remember that you’ll continue to earn additional Sparks in the same pattern indefinitely.

Spark of Shadowflame Time Available
1 May 9th
2 May 23rd
3 June 6th
4 June 20th
5 July 4th

Catch-Up Mechanism for Alts

For players starting a new alt in the middle of Season 2 or those who miss a week of progress, fear not! There’s an alt catch-up system in place, allowing Splintered Sparks of Shadowflame to drop from various activities until your character catches up to the current spark count. These activities include:

  • Mythic+ Loot
  • Raid Bosses
  • PvP Wins
  • World Bosses
  • Boss of Fyrakk Assaults
  • Public Events
  • Niffen
  • Treasure Hunts

Crafting with the Spark of Shadowflame

To craft epic gear in Dragonflight Season 2, you’ll need the Spark of Shadowflame. Each crafted item, regardless of the gear’s type, requires 1 Spark of Shadowflame.

To craft the gear, select the appropriate recipe from your profession and add the Spark of Shadowflame as an optional reagent. Note that crafting Season 2 gear starts at item level 424. To further upgrade the item, you’ll need Enchanted Aspect’s Shadowflame Crests, which can be crafted by combining Sparks of Shadowflame with other materials.

Sparks of Shadowflame are optional reagents used to create 424 item level gear, with Enchanted Aspect's Shadowflame Crest increase them even further.

Recapping Dragonflight Season 2 Crafting

In summary, to maximize your character’s gear in Dragonflight Season 2, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Obtain your first Spark of Shadowflame through the Campaign Tutorial Quest, Power Unified.
  2. Earn Splintered Sparks of Shadowflame weekly by completing the A Worthy Ally: Loamm Niffen quest or participating in Proving PvP Quests.
  3. Combine two Splintered Sparks of Shadowflame to create a full Spark of Shadowflame.
  4. Use Sparks of Shadowflame to craft and upgrade epic gear in Patch 10.1.
  5. If you’re playing an alt or missed a week, use the catch-up system to acquire additional Splintered Sparks of Shadowflame.

By following these steps and staying up-to-date with the Spark of Shadowflame availability, you’ll be well-equipped to face the challenges of Dragonflight Season 2. Good luck, and may the shadows guide your path!
